It’s important to know when to spell out state names and when to abbreviate them.
Spelling Out State Names
- Always spell out a state’s name when beginning a sentence. This enhances readability and ensures a smooth flow for your reader (Example: California’s diverse landscapes, from towering redwoods to sun-drenched beaches, attract millions of visitors each year).
- Numbers Under 10
- If your sentence mentions a number of states less than 10, spell them out (Example: Five states bordering the Great Lakes boast thriving fishing industries).
- Alaska and Hawaii are always spelled out in full for clarity.
State Name Abbreviations
- After introducing a state with its full name, subsequent mentions within the same story can utilize the two-letter postal abbreviations (Example: The company announced new manufacturing plants in CA, TX, and FL).
